Types of Trees That Need Pruning
Do some trees need pruning more than others? All trees can benefit from pruning, but there are added benefits for certain types of trees that might need a little more care.
Mature Trees
Mature trees have a lot of foliage to support, so pruning can help in that effort. By cutting off the unhealthy or dead parts, a mature tree can put all of its energy toward staying strong.
Young Trees
During the early stages of new growth when a tree is setting down roots, it needs a lot of help to thrive and survive. Pruning helps young trees stay strong as they're growing.
Fruit Trees
Producing fruit is a lot of work for a tree! Pruning off the parts that aren’t doing so well can allow the fruit tree to direct its energy toward producing more flowering and fruit.
Fast-Growing Trees
Trees that grow quickly are going to need more TLC to keep things under control. Examples of fast-growing trees include Leyland Cypress and Weeping Willows.
Trees That Are Prone to Disease
In Central Texas, the live oak trees are gorgeous, but they've had to fight off some serious diseases. They are just one type of tree that's prone to disease and can benefit from regular pruning that keeps an eye out for issues.
Types of Pruning Techniques
Some tree trimming businesses just start clipping away without a real strategy. At Tree Green Services we take the time to analyze what you need and use the right type of pruning technique.
And of course, we also factor in which pruning technique you're most interested in.
Structural Pruning
With structural pruning the goal is to improve longevity of the tree by creating a strong structure. That is done by pruning tree branches back from the central limb and making sure the branches are well spaced.
Thinning Pruning
As the name suggests, this type of pruning is used when you need to thin out a tree that is overgrown. With this technique living branches and parts may be pruned along with dead foliage. If you just want the canopy thinned out the technique to use is called crown thinning.
Reduction Pruning
This pruning technique is used to reduce the height of a tree. Pruning is done just at the top to a desired height, which creates uniformity. A technique called pollarding is used if you want to reduce the height and width of the tree.
Directional Pruning
Did you know you can influence the direction of branch growth by pruning? Directional pruning is based on how you want the branches to grow. By strategically cutting the branches based on the direction of bud growth you can control the shape of the tree to a certain degree.
Of course, no matter what pruning technique you use proper cutting is also needed to prevent disease and damage. The last thing you want is to prune trees in an attempt to make them healthier only to cause more harm than good.
No matter what type of pruning you need you can trust Tree Green Services to provide expert guidance and services that can't be matched by other Austin companies.
How is tree pruning different from tree trimming?
You may have noticed that we offer both tree trimming and tree pruning. And you may be wondering what’s the difference. One of the biggest misconceptions is that tree pruning and tree trimming are essentially the same thing when they are unique services that are used for different reasons.
When we prune a tree it's more of a detailed process. We're going in with hand shears to make small pruning cuts for aesthetics as well as the health of the tree. Tree trimming is needed to remove entire branches or sections of a tree because tree limbs are touching the house, parts of the tree are diseased or they're already dead.
Customers that aren't sure which service they need can give us a call. We're happy to explain what's involved with each service and provide professional guidance on which tree service will work best.
Why Tree Pruning is Important
One of the most common reasons people call us for pruning services is aesthetics. Their trees are looking a little unkempt and they want to improve the shape, clean up foliage or make the canopy look nicer. All that is possible with a good pruning service, but there are other important reasons to prune your trees.
Pruning Supports Plant Health
The #1 reason to prune plants is to support their health. Keeping trees pruned promotes healthy growth by helping trees allocate resources better and get more sunlight.
Pruning Can Help You Spot Tree Disease Early
Pruning is detailed work where you're going to get a look at every inch of a tree. Being up close an expert will be able to spot early signs of disease and help the tree recover more quickly. By catching the disease early you can also prevent the spread and protect other plants.
When You Need Tree Trimming Instead of Pruning
There are times when you can't prune the problem away. When you have dead tree branches that are threatening the safety and security of your property as well as people you need tree trimming services at the very least to completely remove the dead branches.
If the tree is dying and past the point of being salvaged or it's diseased, the best option is to use tree removal services to completely remove dead trees. The liability is just too great and your yard won't be safe with branches and limbs that can fall off with the first good wind.
Tree Green Services can handle it all from aesthetic pruning to tree removal services that clear space for new plants. Give us a call to discuss your yard project!
